I met this gentleman called Silvanus at the Platz Am Meer in Vineta, Swakopmund. He is a customer service support agent (not sure if that is his true title) at the Woolworths Group shop at PLATZAMMEER, Swakopmund, Namibia.
What stood out for me was his heart and his genuine desire to help us. As soon as he saw my son and he overheard us as we were deciding about the suits and cuts for my sons first day at work, he quickly jumped in and took over and I had to stand aside and watch him and his colleague rally around my son and help him select the right pieces for his first week.
They were not only selecting pieces, but at the same time giving priceless advice that only a father could give a son. As a single mom, such moments do bring tears as I had lost my dad also just about three short weeks before all this happened. My dad was dually the one helping my son and mentoring him especially in areas where as a girl I was quite limited to make an impact.
Mr Silvanus was genuinely happy to see a young man succeed and wanted to help this young man make the most of the opportunity ahead of him. At that moment I realised that when a young man wins, it sparks faith in others whether young or old, its as if something lifts of others and sparks engagement. In the world today, it's really refreshing to see that especially in this unlikely location.
Mr Silvanus excitedly called his colleague over for additional support and both of them were enthusiastically selecting, choosing, rejecting and commenting on the what and what not to wear to work for my son. They took over completely as if I wasn't even there, and I had to stand aside and just watch them do what they do best. They had no idea I was taking pictures.
It's such a blessing to see men be genuinely happy for other men and wish them well as they start their professional journeys. I must say that I have witnessed our men being beaten down, unfairly judged and unfairly treated just because they were born as men.
I have noticed that men do not really have a voice in today's society and if they do have, it's a voice that is slowly vanishing and that need us to speak up and share.
It's normal for others to disagree, however it's not about competing with women, but it's important that men take their place in society. It's important for men to stand strong and inspire others in this world.
As a mother of boys, I know how important it is for young men to have healthy role models in their lives. I therefore appreciate the warmth, the support and the openness of Mr Silvanus as he was informally mentoring my son in a clothing store. I'm sure the lessons my son learnt will be passed on to his children one day and to friends & family.
Thank you Mr Silvanus for being a caring and dedicated customer support agent. You really touched my heart. Keep on inspiring young men who come through your doors whether in the store or in your community. It's not just about the right cut of the suit. It's much more than that.
